Internship Opportunity: Farming Concrete (NYC)

Farming Concrete (www.farmingconcrete.com) is a project partnering with GreenThumb and Just Food to measure food production in NYC community gardens. We will be mapping areas under cultivation and weighing produce throughout the growing season.

* Outreach to community gardens to talk about policy and gather participants
* Coordinate and create map of areas under cultivation in community gardens
* Train and support gardeners in weighing produce
* Be at the gardens often and help out with whatever is needed
* Blog, take photos, make films, document, paint, write, speak
* Data entry of old GreenThumb community garden data – perhaps for a map of gardens over time? Trends? Let’s get creative.

We are actively fund-raising to pay interns, but for now the position is unpaid. Start and end dates are flexible. Schedule is also flexible, as it is dependent on the schedules of the community gardeners (we will have regular meetings and check-ins, too). Many hours will be on weekends, when gardens are open and people are outside. That said, interns and researchers would be able to hold a part-time job during the week and still commit the hours necessary to fulfill their duties, but they would have to be hard workers, independent, self-motivated, and wonderfully eager to work/explore/learn in the field of urban agriculture!

To apply, send a cover letter and resume to mara@farmingconcrete.com – feel free to email or call (908.787.2711) with any questions!
