Share

Time to get off the computer and out of the house!

After you scroll the list of upcoming events first, of course.

Be sure to come back and let me know which event you attended and what you thought of it.

More than a few of these events may contain your favorite word (FREE). So get on your bike, board, skates, or get an Unlimited and get out!

Saturday, June 12

All Day

Brooklyn Pride

We ain’t free ’til everybody’s free. Show your solidarity for same gender loving Brooklynites and their advocates with an all day celebration of family and adult-friendly activities in and around Prospect Park.

11a-5

Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Centennial Bee-Day Party (free)

Now that beekeeping is legal in NYC (like legalities ever stopped New Yorkers from hustlin’), 2010 might as well be called “The Year of the Honeybee”.  Stop by the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket for some strawberries, sugar snap peas, or other local bounty, then head over to the Garden and join them as they celebrate their birthday and all things bees with walking tours, live music, talks, and honey tastings from local beekeepers.

12-1.30p

The Know Your Sustainable Community Extravaganza (free)

Not really sure if an event that runs for only 90 minutes can be called an extravaganza, but given all the exciting things happening around NYC this weekend, my guess is the Brooklyn Green Team doesn’t want to miss out on the action either.

1-5pm

BK Farmyards presents…Pies Unite!

All the pie you can eat for 20 bucks with the proceeds going to school garden and community farming programs? Yes, please.

7pm

GRUB Party @ Magnolia Tree Earth Center (free, but bring a dish or beverage to share)

Back in 2006, IATP Food & Society Fellows and food justice activists Anna Lappe and Bryant Terry teamed up to write Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen, a straightforward handbook for anyone concerned about both their health and farming practices. Since then, hundreds of people have come together to break (locally-made) bread around issues that matter to them in their communities. Come out to Bed-Stuy’s second GRUB Party (the first one was back in April and hosted by the Bed-Stuy Food Council) and learn about the current Green Map project taking place and maybe even be a part of a documentary in progress.  Come empty handed if you must, but bring your own reusable plate, cup, utensils, and napkins.

9pm
House Party/Fundraiser for US Social Forum

The folks from Families United for Racial and Economic Equality (FUREE) are gearing up to go to the US Social Forum in Detroit to collaborate with other grassroots organizers across the country around social, economic, and food justice in the US.  Donations are appreciated, but you won’t be turned away for wishing them well.

Sunday, June 13

11:15a

Urban Foraging w/ Leda Meredith at Prospect Park

Whoever thought you could find greens, herbs, mushrooms, and berries in a public park? Whoever thought you could eat them? Turns out folks have been foraging in public parks for years, much to the dismay of park officials (It’s technically illegal to “destroy” park property. But I won’t tell if you don’t). Join Locavore, and Gardening/Foraging Educator and author of The Locavore’s Handbook: The Busy Person’s Guide to Eating on a Budget Leda Meredith on an exploration of all things edible in Prospect Park. But act now, it’s almost sold out.

1pm

Red Hook Jazz Festival

There aren’t too many places left in NYC to hear live jazz for $5. Grab brunch at a local restaurant nearby and mellow out at the Urban Meadow.

What’s going on by you? What are you getting into this weekend?
