The End of the World
A couple of weeks of overindulging on refined flour and lack of proper sleep have me nursing a mild sinus infection and giving me an excuse to stay in bed and watch old serials on Netflix. I’ve just finished season 3 of Torchwood and decided to see what the fuss of Doctor Who is about.
I’m having a love/hate relationship with BBC these days.
I’ve been watching the original versions of several recent US spinoffs and the differences are dramatic at times.
The departure from US American-style entertainment has been refreshing, with “real” (read: regular) actors, a diversity of characters, and a relaxed attitude towards sexuality, sexual orientation, and interracial relationships.
And can I tell you how excited I am to hear the word fuck used on a broadcast station?
But, I’m having trouble with the cinematography, editing, and feeling of some of the shows.
Some of the shows feel low budget, especially with the special effects, like they’re not even trying to do better.
I’ve also noticed a few times how shaky the camera is, and what is that about?
And I can’t help feeling a kind of lack of…chemistry among the actors.
I don’t know what else to call it or how to explain it well.
On some shows, it felt forced, like the actors were just reading lines and weren’t feeling the script or scene. Other times, the show itself felt cold.
Interesting.
But the point of this post tonight is the second episode of the first season of the modern update of Doctor Who. The episode is, The End of the World.
The second episode and it’s the end of the world!
It made me think about 2012 and all these prophecies about the end of the Mayan calendar, end of the world, the coming shift in consciousness the spiritual community has been trying to warn and prepare us for.
If you could witness the end of the world (Earth), and be safe and removed from it, what would you do next?
How much of what you’re doing today would matter, since no one would be left to remember it?
What would you have wished you could take with you?
How would you live?
I’ll be contemplating this over the next several weeks, as I motivate to get back into my minimalist groove (I’ve been slacking).
I have some thoughts about the metaphysical aspects of “The Doctor” as well, and I’m looking forward to exploring that in a later post as well.
